Orality, gender, and West African Christian spirituality: Exploring women's voices

Abstract This article explores orality in the context of West African Christian women's voices, arguing that their oral expressions highlight lived faith experiences and function as a significant resource within study Christianity Africa. The first outlines concepts relation to gender, spirituality, language, community engagement. We argue contributions are rich source insight into spirituality but predominantly marginalised from more formal theological discourse. further note is not stepping‐stone academic discourse instead an equal important counterpoint requiring attention. These elucidated through two ethnographic case studies. engages Afua Kuma, non‐literate Ghanaian artist who adapted chiefly praises for Christologically centred prayers. second focuses on Hannah (not her real name), well‐educated Nigerian woman living with disability, whom singing proved spiritually transformative. conclude some challenges benefits engaging orality.
